I did the Starter Sort with my late husband's employment records. Before the session, I had no idea how many letters I actually had from different employers — it turned out to be three separate stacks from different periods. After two hours they were in one labelled folder with a list of what was missing. The summary sheet was the most useful part because my children could read it without needing me to explain everything.

We did the Household Records Programme. I was a bit uncertain about the pace initially — eight weeks felt long — but it actually suited us well because the fortnightly spacing gave us time to think about each area before the next session. The document map at the end was genuinely useful. My one comment is that some categories took a little less time than the session allowed, which left some gaps in the schedule. Not a real problem.

My mother is 71 and the Two-Generation Programme was recommended to us by a family friend. We completed it in April and May this year. What I hadn't expected was how useful the joint walkthrough session would be — my mother and I sat together with the coordinator and walked through both sets of papers. My mother had not known where some of her own documents were, and the session sorted that out calmly. The orientation document is now kept with each set.

I did the Starter Sort to try out the service before signing up for the full programme. I chose membership and pension correspondence as the category because that is where most of my confusion was. The coordinator was methodical — she went through each letter individually, dated it, noted what it was and what action it might have required. Two things were identified as missing. The open-questions register was a list of six items for my financial planner.

My parents are both retired civil servants and between them they had six boxes of papers in no particular order. The Household Records Programme was the right starting point for them. The coordinator was patient with my father, who wanted to explain the history of every document. That patience actually helped, because his explanations identified a category that the standard template does not cover — gratuity correspondence — which was then treated as its own section.

We live outside Kota Kinabalu and were not sure whether Nestward would travel to us. They did, and the travel arrangement was discussed upfront with no surprise charges. Three sessions at our home, covering civil documents and land title correspondence — two areas that had caused us considerable stress simply because the papers were not accessible. They now are.
Case studies
A single parent preparing for early retirement, Kota Kinabalu
The situation
A 58-year-old teacher approaching voluntary retirement had accumulated employment letters, pension correspondence and KWSP statements across four different employers over a 30-year career. The papers were spread across two storage boxes and three drawer sets, partially sorted by year but with no category structure.
What we did
Household Records Programme over eight weeks. Session 1 covered employment history (four employer sets, sorted chronologically within each). Session 2 covered pension and KWSP correspondence. Sessions 3 and 4 covered civil documents and property papers. The final session produced a document map and an open-questions register of nine items for her financial planner.
The outcome
All four employment sets were sorted and labelled. Three gaps were identified — missing employer reference letters — and the gap list gave her a starting point for requesting replacements. The open-questions register was brought to her financial planner at the next appointment. She completed the programme in June 2025.
Two-generation household, Penampang and Kota Kinabalu
The situation
An adult daughter in Kota Kinabalu and her widowed father in Penampang both held retirement-related paperwork with no shared structure. The daughter managed some of her father's affairs but could not locate key documents when needed. Both sets were unindexed, and the digital copies that existed were scattered across two laptops and a USB drive with no consistent naming.
What we did
Two-Generation Archive Programme across five months. We inventoried both households independently, agreed a shared naming convention, rebuilt both physical sets and created a digital archive on a portable hard drive the family already owned. Three walkthrough sessions — one at each household and one joint — ensured both parties understood the arrangement.
The outcome
Both households now hold matching physical and digital sets under the same naming convention. The daughter can locate her father's documents when needed without travelling to Penampang. An open-questions register of eleven items was produced for a solicitor they intended to consult about estate matters. Programme completed July 2025.
A retired couple, first time organising in forty years
The situation
A couple, both retired, had never sorted their combined paperwork into any particular structure. Documents were stored by loose association — things they thought were related were together, but categories were not clear. Their adult son had suggested organising the papers after a difficulty locating a land title during a property transaction.
What we did
We started with a Starter Sort for property and land documents only, which the family wanted to resolve first. They then moved to the Household Records Programme for the remaining categories. The two engagements ran consecutively. Sessions were held at their home in Likas, with the son joining the final session for the orientation note walkthrough.
The outcome
Property documents, identified as the priority, were sorted and summarised first, resolving the immediate concern. The full household programme followed, closing with a document map that the son now holds a copy of. The open-questions register contained four items for a solicitor. The Starter Sort ran in May 2025; the full programme closed in July 2025.
